Reading with Your Ears

Books are such a gift. Aside from that chocolate crispy layer of an ice cream cake, there is NOTHING better on this planet than listening to a great book while going for a nice walk.

It doesn’t hurt that this is my view:

Audiobooks and Podcasts

Audiobooks and podcasts are FANTASTIC tools when it comes to achieving your fitness goals. This is especially true if you’re not the biggest fan of exercise. For more details on why, check out my post on Temptation Bundling and also my Serial Challenge for Gym Haters.

You don’t have to suffer while you exercise. If you keep a healthy diet, a nice walk with a book is just fine to keep you in shape.

Additional benefits:

  • For awkward people – You’ll always have new things to talk about
  • For premature geriatrics – Music is loud
  • For people who hate exercise – A compelling book means a 30 minute walk becomes two hours
  • For people who want to impress other people – Your friends will wonder how you got so fit AND so smart

Pro-Tips

Pro-tip: If you’re buying from Audible.com, listen to a sample first. Make sure you like the narration.

Pro-pro-tip: Audiobooks are expensive. Many local libraries provide free remote access to a wide variety of audiobooks.  Call your library to find out if they offer this service.

Here is my audio-reading list from the past few months:

  • “Bold” by Peter Diamandis and Steven Kotler
  • “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” by Michael Pollan
  • “In Defense of Food” by Michael Pollan
  • “Go Wild” by John Ratey & David Perlmutter
  • “Thinking in Pictures” by Temple Grandin
  • “The Autistic Brain” by Temple Grandin

I highly recommend any of the books from this list. I especially enjoyed the Temple Grandin books.

If you have any recommendations, I’d love to hear.  My preference is non-fiction, but I’m open.

And now, for my walk 🙂

Happy “reading”!

  1. I so agree with you.Great stories, great books paint such extravagant pictures in your mind. I played books on long distance drives. Thanks for the reminder. Good to accompany a walk. Thanks for the good tip!

  2. I totally agree with you. I’m an audiobook junkie, I mostly listen to them on my commute, but when doing cardio I sometimes listen to them. There is a podcast I really like to listen to right now called Tips of the Scale. It’s highly inspirational. Right now I’m listening to Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle, which is really good. Take care.

      1. How about some historical fiction? It may serve to sate your desire for an anchor in reality 🙂

The Boudica series by Manda Scott may be just the thing! If you’re unaware of Boudica as an historical figure, you’re missing out on one of the most interesting (and strongest) women in recorded history.

      2. Fiiiine fiinnne. I’ll check that one out.

Historical fiction just sounds soooooo…..dusty. I feel like I might be able to get into some dystopian type stuff or fantasy.

      3. I don’t haaaatteee fiction, I used to like it a lot actually.

With age something changed in my brain, and now I find it a bit hard to get into 😥

  4. I tend to be more of a music person when working out, but audiobooks have kept me from going insane from my 90+ minute (one way) daily commute. I’m currently on the 3rd book of the Harry Potter series (yes, I know, this came out when I was in middle school. I’m waaaaayyyy behind the times!).

Other books I’ve read include some by Michael Pollan (Cooked is on my MP3 player once I’m done with the current Harry Potter I’m “reading”) Malcom Gladwell’s “Outliers”

Then there’s “Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything” and “Superfreakonomics: Global Cooling, Patriotic Prostitutes, and Why Suicide Bombers Should Buy Life Insurance.”

As for fiction, last year I “read” The Hunger Games Trilogy, The Giver and the 3 sequels to it, and I recently finished the Divergent trilogy.

I also like podcasts, but I’ve got a lot of audiobooks to read right now.
